76ers rookie Michael Carter-Williams was named NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, for games played Oct. 29-Nov. 3, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Carter-Williams and Shaquille O’Neal (1992) are the only players in the league history to win the award in the first weeks of their rookie seasons. Carter-Williams averaged 20.7 points, 9.0 assists and 4.3 steals.

An award like this doesn’t seem like something that will faze Carter-Williams, the 21-year-old Syracuse product who is as low-key as they come. His confident, calming demeanor is a reason the Sixers (3-0) are undefeated through the season’s first week.

“I just try to focus on the next game, each and every day,” Carter-Williams said Monday at shootaround, before the Sixers hosted Golden State. “I work as hard as I can and do whatever to help the team.”

Said Spencer Hawes: “The first game (a win over Miami), the way he handled both ends down the stretch, and the calming presence he had to get us in the halfcourt and execute in the halfcourt, I think that’s when he sold everybody.”

Minnesota’s Kevin Love won Western Conference Player of the Week honors.
